Nissan puts GT 2012 on hold
The economic crisis has claimed another victim, the heir to the Nissan Silvia! Following a net loss of ¥83.2 billion or just over $0.9 billion, the company said in a statement it “needs … further changes to the company’s cash management strategy, business structure and investment plans” which includes cutting 20,000 jobs worldwide, further scaling back of production, reducing capital spending, eliminating bonuses for directors, and suspending the company’s GT 2012 plan. The GT 2012 plan included plans for a new turbocharged 2-Liter 4 cylinder, front-engined, rear-wheel-drive (FR) sportscar to replace the discontinued Nissan 200SX or Nissan Silvia as it was called in Japan.
Also included in the GT 2012 plan was an all-wheel drive Infiniti super saloon based on the GT-R platform, which was to challenge the Porsche Panamera and the Lagonda Rapide. Unfortunately, this car has also been suspended as Nissan turns its attention to developing fuel efficient small and medium-sized cars in an effort to survive the economic crisis.
One car that was included in the GT 2012 plan that will go ahead, is the development of an electric vehicle due for launch in Japan and the U.S. in 2010.
